Distractions has a long history in the Haight Ashbury. Way back in 1976  Jimmy, the owner of Distractions, opened his first store at 1409 Haight Street and named it The White Rabbit after the popular Jefferson Airplane song.

The Haight was a rough neighborhood back then and Jimmy was one of the pioneer merchants to take the boards off the window and renovate a storefront that had been vacant since 1968.

Then in 1978 Jimmy co-founded Pipe Dreams at 1612 Haight Street. Partnership differences had Jimmy leaving to create his own shop. Distractions opened in May 1982 at 1692 Haight Street. Originally Distractions clothing catering to the New Wave and Punk movement. There was also a large head shop in the shop with various smoking paraphernalia.

Distractions has changed the wares it sells over the decades as the counterculture in the Haight Ashbury evolved. From New Wave, Punk, to Grateful Dead tie-dyes, to Rave and club wear, we fell into the Burning Man scene in the early 1990's and have been catering to the Burner crowd since then. Jimmy has always had an appreciation of all things Victorian which inspired the Steam Punk decor which Distractions currently displays.

Please feel free to drop by 1552 Haight anyway and come by for a visit. If Jimmy is working he can amuse you with decades worth of Haight Ashbury history and stories. Hope to see you soon.
